History

Founded in 1801, The University of South Carolina was one of the first universities to confer the doctoral degree, awarding its first PhD in 1891.

The Graduate School was formally instituted in 1906. Prior to that, students wanting to pursue a graduate degree undertook an individually designed course of study, working alongside faculty members and taking additional courses.

Today, the University of South Carolina offers more than 250 different graduate and certificate programs, with students representing all 50 states and 83 different countries.
