Sharing the grad school experience

The Graduate School at the University of South Carolina has begun a new initiative to better tell the story of life as a grad student (and grad alumnus) at USC.  In partnership with various units across campus—including the Office of Institutional Assessment and Compliance, the Office of the Provost, the Office of Research, the Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs, News and Internal Communications, the Center for Teaching Excellence and others—as well as with graduate directors, graduate program coordinators and, most importantly, graduate students themselves—we are seeking to shed light on one important question:

What is it like to be a graduate student at the University of South Carolina?

One of the ways we have started to answer this question is by distilling existing data on graduate students and by sharing it in a more systematic way. Since beginning the initiative in 2012, we have uncovered—and campus units have generously shared —a wealth of information highlighting the talent and breadth of our graduate students.

Among the most impressive: more than 22 percent of those graduating with doctoral degrees in the 2012-2013 academic year have already landed tenure-track positions.  Also noteworthy, our diverse graduate student population makes up more than one-fourth of the total student body population at USC Columbia!

Our next efforts will be to bring together campus-wide data on the number of postdoctoral fellowships secured by USC graduates, career and doctoral program placements for master’s students, average graduate student loan debt, and community engagement and impact among graduate students and alumni. We will continue to seek out figures on tenure-faculty placements upon graduation.

Students, graduate directors, program administrators and campus units are invited to submit ideas for other kinds of data they would like to see highlighted and distributed by The Graduate School.  If you have a suggestion, please contact Wright Culpepper at
