Outstanding Thesis Award

The Graduate School at the University of South Carolina, in conjunction with the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools, seeks to award graduate students with the Outstanding Thesis Award.

One award will be given annually in each of the following four categories:
  • Humanities
  • Social Sciences
  • Fine Arts
  • STEM

Award Amount: $250

Theses will be evaluated, as appropriate, on the basis of originality, clarity of style and presentation, scholarship, research methodology, and contributions to the field or discipline.

Winners will be announced at the Graduate Student Day Awards Ceremony. Programs may nominate up to two candidates.

Eligibility

The 2016 Outstanding Thesis Award is retroactive and thus is open to students who completed a thesis in 2015.

Nominations

Nomination Materials for Humanities, Social Sciences, and STEM:
  • Nomination form, signed by the graduate director
  • Letters from two referees, evaluating the significance and quality of the nominee’s thesis. One of these letters should be from the nominee’s thesis advisor; the second can be from a person of the nominee’s choice
  • Executive Summary of the thesis (not to exceed 2 pages)
  • Abstract (not to exceed 10 pages) of the nominee’s thesis, typed double-spaced on 8½” x 11” white paper. Appendices containing non-textual material, such as charts or tables, may be included and will not count toward the 10 pages. All pages should be numbered and bear the name of the nominee
  • Brief CV or Resume (1-2 pages)
Nomination Materials for Fine Arts:
  • Nomination form, signed by the graduate director
  • Letters from two referees, evaluating the significance and quality of the nominee’s thesis. One of these letters should be from the nominee’s thesis advisor; the second can be from a person of the nominee’s choice
  • Artist Statement (not to exceed 2 pages)explaining the process, media, significance, meaning, value, function/purpose, etc. of the nominee’s work
  • Creative Portfolio providing evidence of creative output and ability and which documents work performed or exhibited as part of a master’s thesis project and consistent with the standards of the student’s discipline
    Format Guidelines
    Up to 10 images, 5 minutes of audio/visual, or 10 page writing sample (this can include a novel excerpt, short story, group of poems or script). Digital works are welcome and should be submitted by CD or DVD
  • Brief CV or Resume (1-2 pages)
