The University of South Carolina is an oasis of green in the middle of a city, a historic campus with 200-year-old buildings and an ultra-modern institution with sparkling new facilities and amenities. Parking on campus can be tricky, however, especially during peak hours. Students have the option of walking, biking, driving, or taking the shuttle onto campus.

A Bike Friendly Campus

The University of South Carolina is the recipient of the League of American Bicyclists’ Bike Friendly University Bronze Level Award for promoting and providing a more bikeable campus for students, staff and visitors. USC is the first school in South Carolina and the Southeastern Conference to be recognized.

Carolina Shuttle System

The Carolina Shuttle System provides free service on campus for students, faculty, and staff. The bus runs Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 5:30pm during the fall and spring semesters only. The evening shuttle runs from 5:30pm to 12:30am. Operation times are limited during the summer, reading days and holidays.

Hertz on Demand

Want to rent an environmentally friendly vehicle by the hour? Now you can! Hertz on Demand is on campus. They rent small cars—like a Toyota Prius or a Mini Cooper—for just $9 an hour. This rate includes gas, insurance, and GPS navigation.

Parking Services

Parking on campus is available to all students whose vehicle displays a valid parking permit. Unless otherwise specified, the permit does not guarantee a particular parking space. Students must register all cars, mopeds, and bicycles to park on campus. Apply for parking permits in the PERSONAL tab on VIP. Disability parking permits may be obtained by providing appropriate medical documentation. Parking Services is located in the Pendleton Street Garage on the corner of Pickens and Pendleton streets. Office hours are 8:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Contact them at (803)777-5160.

The Bike Shop

Outdoor Recreation offers a wide range of free bicycling based services to all University of South Carolina students, faculty, and staff. (Some bike parts may need to be purchased.) Services provided by trained and experienced mechanics include:

  • tune-ups
  • brake and gear adjustments
  • part replacements
  • wheel truing
  • new bike assembly
  • flat tire repairs

The Bike Shop is located at the Outdoor Recreation Office in Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center Room 120.
