Message of Support for Ukraine

March 11, 2022

Dear Carolina Community,

As we watch the troubling events in Ukraine, the University of South Carolina shares the world’s concern for the people of that country, and we are exploring ways that we can assist higher education students, faculty and researchers from Ukrainian universities.

Faculty members and administrators from our university have begun discussions with the Institute of International Education, on whose Board of Trustees I serve, to prepare for assisting graduate students and faculty who are being displaced from their academic institutions because of the war. In the days and weeks ahead, we will work with IIE and other international agencies to coordinate the appropriate activities, resources and logistics to try to welcome, mentor and otherwise assist these scholars, and we will advocate for federal funding to support this initiative. We hope to collaborate, as appropriate, with other U.S. universities who are likewise preparing to assist those fleeing Ukraine.

In this time of trial for the Ukrainian people, we will stand with fellow U.S. universities to do what we can to help. I am proud of the University of South Carolina faculty who have already expressed an eagerness to provide an academic home for these displaced scholars. Thank you.
